Death Valley National Park
What a perfect name for this place! The pictures don't do justice to the "nothingness" that surrounds everything.
A campground in the desert. No plants and no connectivity.
Yep, this is exactly what it looks like. Same way looking right or left also.
Called the devil's golf course .. not sure why. Salt crystals on mounds of oddly shaped dirt. Go figure.
What would a desert be without some sand dunes?
Where is David Henderson (geologist friend) when I need him? Some of this we knew but the faults and different kinds of rock were incredible.
Small roads through some badlands but with a lot of color.
Badwater - the lowest place in North American. 282 feet below sea level. Say what you will, it is interesting how the topography shapes the environment of this place.
Aptly named Mosaic Canyon - just like you would make a mosaic pattern.
Hiking through Mosaic Canyon with more interesting rock formations.
Salt River in Death Valley (really not a river). Comes from a spring and runs out on the valley floor - maybe about 2 or 3 miles. Still no trees either. Home to rare and endangered pup fish (who were all in the stream flow). Just the fact there is water here is amazing.
This is Scotty's Castle - a long and bizarre story. Too long to put on the site but look it up. It's about a con man and a millionaire. Anyone who would think about living in Death Valley has got to be a little "off".
We think we have had our desert "fix" for the year. After traveling throsugh West Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and the Sonoran desert in California we are ready to head to wine country in the Santa Maria valley area. The past 2 weeks we have been in mostly 90+ degree weather and we are looking toward to some 70 degree stuff. So we'll take a couple of days to just relax, restock, and get some things done on the coach. We started having problems with the surge guard while we were in Alpine and it's continued off and on since then (only when on 50 amp). We've also got stranded in the fuel lane at a Flying J travel center when the motor wouldn't restart. After about 45 minutes, it started right up. I think it's a ignition switch issue but it's running now and seems to be working fine. I also checked all the fuses to make sure they were seated in tight. Stay tuned.
Coming down into the valley again. Most of these trips involved 4 or 5 thousand feet in elevation change.
