More Time in Yosemite Before Heading Back To Texas
Many you have probably heard about the two BASE jumpers who were killed in Yosemite near the end of May. This happened on the Saturday the day we got into our camping spot. Helicopters were all over the place searching for them late that day and early on Sunday morning also (that's the day they were found). We had planned to go up to Glacier Point and do some hiking later and did have a chance to hike to the point where they jumped off (it's illegal to do BASE jumping in Yosemite). Let's see, let me go up to this point with a 3000 foot dropoff with my winged suit (and a parachute) and try to fly through some rock crevices with one of my buddies. NOT. See below for pictures.
Now this is much better, what a view.
Glacier Point with a view of Half Dome and Vernal and Nevada Falls. Note the absence of snow in the background. This area is usually closed until after Memorial Day, not this year. Snowpack was about a 1/3 of normal and the drought continues.
It's cold up here, about 40 degrees but who cares.
Glacier Point with a view of Yosemite Fall. This is the rock that people would go out to get on to have their picture taken. Any chance of Cindy doing that?? Not much chance of me doing it either.
We are on the way over to Taft Point which is where the BASE jumpers went off. The geology is amazing.
From Taft Point, a great view of El Capitan ... the 3000 foot rock face that the big time climbers scale. When standing next to this, you can't help but be amazed.
View from Taft Point looking up the valley toward Yosemite Fall
Another view of El Capitan. No climbers were on it either day we were in the Park.
Yep, a beautiful place. We were so glad to have the opportunity to experience the majesty of Yosemite.
On our last day, we went to a couple of areas where they have the giant sequoias. These groves were fairly small (30 to 50 trees and maybe 15 miles between the two groves ... plus about a 3 mile hike on both places). Cindy taking a picture for some other tourists.
The tunnel tree. Actually made as a tourist stunt on a dead stump, it's been around for maybe a 100 years??
It was with some sadness when we pulled out of the campground the next day. We had 5 days of driving to get back to Texas and it's always with mixed emotions as we look forward to getting back home and knowing that we will miss the wandering lifestyle that we also love. Thanks for looking .. we enjoy sharing our stories and hope you find it enjoyable also.
Best wishes to all we look forward to our next travel adventure.

Look ... we actually have water in the lake! While we were driving home, we were blessed with having the lake come up 38 feet, it's still 15 feet below full, but it is so nice to have the lake back. Now we need to look for a boat to replace the one we sold 3 years ago.
We also missed a beautiful spring of wildflowers in Texas ... this was taken in Muleshoe Bend Park, right next to our neighborhood.
